Prince William of Gloucester Barracks

Grantham

As part of a wider £5.1bn investment portfolio to deliver a more modern and sustainable estate for the military to live, work and train on, Prince William of Gloucester Barracks has been identified as surplus to military requirements and is expected to close when the Army vacates in 2028. This provides a potential opportunity to create an integrated, new community that will continue to be part of local life when the army leaves.

Community update

We hosted two community drop-in events in November 2024 to update the community on the future of the barracks. If you were unable to attend the events, a copy of the information boards displayed are available here. We plan to hold more detailed consultation events next year to shape the masterplan for any future development of the barracks.

We would like to hear about what is important to you as a local resident when bringing forward any development. You can tell us what you think by completing the feedback form below. Thank you for taking part in the consultation.

About Prince William of Gloucester Barracks

The barracks is currently home to the Army Training Regiment, accommodating both military and civilian personnel.

The 224 hectare site located on the A52, close to Grantham and nearby villages, comprises a mix of buildings and areas of green open space. This includes The Jubilee Woods which were planted in 2017 by The Woodland Trust. Careful consideration will be given to how this area of the site is treated as part of the future plans.

What’s on the site?

The history of the barracks

Established as the Royal Flying Corps Grantham during World War I and serving as an airbase, the site  continued life as a training facility throughout World War Il and officially became RAF Spitalgate before transferring to the British Army in 1975 and being named after Prince William of Gloucester in 1977.

The Officers’ Mess, a Grade II listed building constructed around 1925, serves as both a recreational space and living quarters for officers. Surrounded by landscaped lawns, it will be preserved and repurposed in future plans to honour the site’s military heritage.
